Vessels on the River Mersey
The landing stage should be completed by summer 2011
Plans for a new £7m landing stage for Mersey Ferries have been announced, after the old one sank in bad weather.
Ferry passengers boarding in Liverpool have used a temporary landing stage since the last one was grounded in a storm in March 2006.
Merseytravel has now commissioned Balfour Beattie to design the new construction.
Scheduled to open next summer, it will complement the Cruise Liner terminal and be of a similar design.
It will also provide permanent accommodation for the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service rescue boat.
Neil Scales, chief executive of Merseytravel, which owns and operates the Mersey Ferries, said: "We are at the design stage and construction work is scheduled to start in the autumn.
"The landing stage will sit in front of our new £10.5m Pier Head Ferry Terminal which now houses a superb restaurant and Beatles attraction to complete an iconic river gateway to the city."
The cost will be met partly by European grants and partly by Merseytravel, with a contribution from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.
